Programs for Today’s Competitive Job Market

careerCareer development training prepares our adult scholars to make informed career decisions through awareness and understanding of individual qualities that contribute to success on the job, the ability to use employment data and other resources to support decision making, and an awareness of the training and post-secondary options available for success. Our framework is based on best practices defined by the US Department of Education and the National Career Development Association. We define career development as a truly lifelong process of gaining awareness of individual interests, skills, attitudes, talents, and abilities. We begin that process by taking our scholars through three modules:

  • Gaining Clarity: evaluation of skills, interests, personality, and values, understanding the world of work and occupational options.
  • Taking Action: job search or current occupation goal setting.
  • Staying Motivated: maintaining a mindset of career momentum and support.

softskillsOur Soft Skills development encompasses job readiness training. Our training aligns with the nationally recognized Work Readiness Credentialing program. Best practices based on the Equipped for the Future (EFF) Standards Framework define the goals of the adult scholar as they develop and enhance their skills and knowledge so that they can better carry out their responsibilities as citizens, family members, and workers. There are five cornerstones or modules addressed by our curriculum:

  • Professional communication
  • Teamwork and networking
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation
  • Critical thinking and observation
  • Conflict management and negotiation

21stcent-bThe global economy is driven by innovation and knowledge. Emerging marketplaces engage in intense competition and constant renewal with complex policy, scientific, technological, health and environmental challenges. Success hinges on thriving in diverse workplaces, collaborative relationships and social networking. To hold information-age jobs, scholars must understand the trends and changes in industries, the skills necessary to compete in growth and emerging industries, and key credentials or knowledge benchmarks. Through understanding technologies and invention of today, we can prepare our adult scholars to remain competitive in the industries of tomorrow.

suitPreparing adults for entry or re-entry into the workforce must include training them to identify and respond to the “dynamics at the interview table.” The screening and interview process can be quite daunting. Our interactive training techniques help unemployed and underemployed individuals put planning and preparation into practice to obtain realized results. Our methods have been shown to build skills and increase confidence. Modules include:

  • Job skills assessment
  • Job searching
  • Communication techniques
  • Relevant experience and story development
  • Professional dress and appearance

careerbooksAfter completion of our resume development module, the jobseeker becomes a more marketable candidate with a compelling resume. The resume development module also includes:

  • Choosing references
  • Formatting and use of white space
  • Cover letter development

networkingThe purpose of this training is to introduce scholars to the process of networking and to help them understand its relevance to the career development process. Participants will learn the importance of taking initiative and overcoming fear (which is quite common). The course also addresses informational interviewing as well as guidelines when using social media for networking purposes. The Networking 101 module covers three distinct but interdependent forms of networking—operational, personal, and strategic— and includes:

  • Developing an authentic personal branding statement
  • Identifying relevant and trending groups
  • Relationship linking and growth of the sphere of influence

financeThis module helps scholars to understand the concept of financial stability by focusing on personal goal-based strategies. Our scholars learn the basics of handling money and finances, including sustaining positive relationships with financial institutions. Our modules aim to build skills that will create a foundation for financial self-sufficiency and include:

  • Financial services
  • Budgeting
  • Investments
  • Insurance protection
